Brett Lee & McCullum’s unpleasant incident
In the 2011 edition of the Big Bash League, Australia’s premier domestic T20 tournament, an incident unfolded involving Brendon McCullum and Brett Lee. McCullum was playing for the Brisbane Heat, while Lee represented the Sydney Sixers. Having won the toss, the opening batsmen of Brisbane, Matthew Hayden and Brendon McCullum, stepped onto the field.
The dynamic opening pair cautiously faced the first two overs before Brett Lee took charge of the bowling attack in the third over. Recognizing the need to increase the scoring rate, McCullum confidently advanced down the pitch to face a cleverly disguised slower delivery, but unfortunately, he only managed to nick the ball slightly. Fortunately, the ball didn’t carry to the wicketkeeper, Brad Haddin.
However, McCullum’s luck took a turn for the worse with the next delivery. With a fiery run-up, Lee unleashed a vicious bouncer that struck McCullum squarely on the nose, causing profuse bleeding. As shown in the video, McCullum was visibly caught off guard by the pace of the delivery, resulting in a late attempt at executing a pull shot. Unfortunately, the ball managed to evade the protective grill on his helmet and struck his nose. Although McCullum didn’t appear excessively troubled by the incident, the bleeding persisted.

The opposing players, including Lee, displayed genuine concern for McCullum’s well-being. Despite the physiotherapist’s best efforts and the considerable time spent wiping the blood away with a towel, McCullum was compelled to leave the field, retiring hurt.
Following the dismissal of James Hopes, McCullum made a comeback to the crease. However, his time at the wicket was short-lived as he was dismissed for 5 runs by MacGill. Subsequently, the captain of the Sixers, Brad Haddin, showcased excellent leadership skills by leading his team to a comfortable victory in the chase.
