Cricket Viral Video: In 1989, David Boon was the star opening batsman for Australia in a 4-0 thrashing of England, scoring an average of 55 per innings. However, his biggest achievement of the tour came on a flight from Sydney to London, where he reportedly drank 52 cans of beer, breaking the previous record of 44 set by Rod Marsh and Doug Walters.

David Boon mustered unique record

Boon has denied the reports of the record, calling them a "Hans Christian Andersen fairytale", but his teammates remember it differently. Fellow batsman Dean Jones claimed to have witnessed Boon down 22 beers by the time they reached Singapore, and he fell asleep before waking up to the sound of loud applause and the captain's announcement that Boon had reached 52.

Boon's feat, along with his distinctive handlebar mustache, made him a cult hero to Australian cricket fans. Despite downing 52 cans of beer, Boon managed to walk off the plane without assistance, unlike Rodney Marsh, who was so comatose after drinking 44 beers that his teammates Dennis Lillee and Graeme Wood had to wheel him through customs on a luggage trolley.

Boon had no plans to attempt to break the previous record of 44 beers consumed by Rod Marsh and Doug Walters, but as the drinks began to flow, he and a few others picked up momentum.

35 pints of beer in 16 hours

By the time the plane had reached Singapore, Boon and some of his companions had already consumed 23 beers each. The drinking competition took its toll, and many passengers soon began to drop out. Boon, however, soldiered on, ultimately downing the equivalent of 35 pints of beer in just under 16 hours.

Despite Boon's claim that the reports of his record were a "fairytale," his teammate Dean Jones attested to seeing Boon finish 22 beers before falling asleep. Jones later woke up to the sound of applause and the captain announcing Boon's achievement.
