Cricket Viral Video: In a 2003 World Cup match against Bangladesh at Pietermaritzburg, Chaminda Vaas achieved a hat-trick with the first three balls. Prior to this, there were 15 occurrences of a hat-trick in men’s ODIs, with Jalal-Ud-Din (PAK vs AUS) being the first in 1982.
Chaminda Vaas pulls off a hattrick on first three balls
Bangladesh, who were the newest members of ICC Full Members, had a poor start in the World Cup, losing to Canada by 60 runs. Although Sri Lanka was favored to win, Vaas’s performance in the first over was unexpected. He had previously achieved a hat-trick just over a year ago at the SSC, where he took out Stuart Carlisle, Craig Wishart, and Tatenda Taibu en route to his famous 8-19, which remains the best figures in ODI history.
Hannan Sarkar was known for getting out to the first ball of the match, a fate he would suffer five times in Test cricket, three of which were to Pedro Collins. James Anderson got him later in the same year. In the 2003 World Cup match, Chaminda Vaas clean bowled him on the first ball, as Hannan attempted a drive without much footwork.
On the second ball, Mohammad Ashraful tried to defend but hit the ball straight back to Vaas. Sanath Jayasuriya surrounded Ehsanul Haque with fielders as Vaas bowled the third ball, which took the outside edge and was easily caught by Mahela Jayawardene without having to move.

Chaminda Vaas is the only bowler to date who has completed a hat-trick within the first three balls of a men’s ODI. He celebrated the achievement by looking like “an aeroplane piloted by a drunkard,” according to the Wisden Almanack. After the hat-trick, Vaas continued to impress, trapping Sanwar Hossain leg-before after he had hit a boundary.
His figures at that point were 0.5-0-4-4, and Al Shahriar was yet to face a ball. Bangladesh was soon 25-5 before Alok Kapali (32) and Khaled Mashud (20) took them to 70. Then Mashrafe Mortaza (28 in 23 balls) swung his bat around to take them to 124. Vaas ended with figures of 6-25. The chase was completed in 21.1 overs by Marvan Atapattu (69*) and Jayasuriya (55*).
