Ball disappears in the grass
On August 1, the One-Day Cup commenced with an exciting lineup of five simultaneous games in the opening round. Among them was the clash between Lancashire and Essex at the Sedbergh School Ground. Unfortunately, rain played spoilsport, and the match was eventually washed out. Due to the weather conditions, the game was shortened to a 36-over contest after Essex won the toss and opted to field first. In Lancashire’s innings, all eight batters managed to score 20 or more runs, except for Keaton Jennings, who contributed 19.
Lancashire’s Dane Vilas shone with a brilliant 65 off 44 balls, guiding his team to 270-7 in 36 overs. In response, Essex began their innings at 23-2 after six overs when rain forced the match to be called off. While the on-field action was enthralling, it was a moment of off-field drama that caught everyone’s attention.
During the fourth over of Lancashire’s innings, Keaton Jennings showcased his prowess by smashing Essex bowler Aaron Beard for three consecutive boundaries after a wide delivery on the first ball. However, the last boundary proved a bit too much as the ball disappeared into the dense undergrowth across the ground.
