Cricket Viral Video: India’s 2007–2008 tour of Australia got off to a disastrous start in the Melbourne Boxing Day Test. However, the team displayed signs of a recovery in the following game. Monkeygate, a contentious incident that soured relations between India and Australia in cricket, marred the test, nevertheless.
Harbhajan Singh Accused of Racial Remark Amidst Heated Exchange with Andrew Symonds
VVS Laxman and Sachin Tendulkar gave a strong performance at the beginning, both reaching hundreds, while Rahul Dravid and Sourav Ganguly, two other experienced team members, reached the fifties. India had a solid start, but their middle order had a collapse that placed them in danger of losing a lead. However, Tendulkar persisted, and with the assistance of Harbhajan Singh (who hit 63), the two quickly put together a 129-run partnership for the eighth wicket that helped India finish with a score of 532/10. Harbhajan and Sachin Tendulkar were batting at the eighth wicket and had each reached 100 runs while collaborating effectively. Brett Lee delivered a terrific shot, and Harbhajan congratulated him afterward. However, Andrew Symonds then muttered something offensive into the microphone. When Harbhajan responded, the players got into a heated dispute. Harbhajan was charged with making a racial remark about Symonds by umpire Mark Benson, referring to him as a “monkey.”
Harbhajan Singh Charged with Three-Test Suspension Despite Lack of Evidence
Following a complaint from the Australian captain Ricky Ponting, Harbhajan was charged with a Level 3 infraction at the conclusion of Day 3. The hearing was subsequently postponed until the end of the Test, even though it was originally scheduled for the end of Day 4. Meanwhile, Australia defeated India for 210 after scoring 401/7 in their second innings, taking a 2-0 series lead. The bad judgement of umpire Steve Bucknor also benefited Australia. In both dressing rooms after the heated Sydney Test, tensions were high. The focus swiftly shifted to Harbhajan’s hearing, where the spinner was sentenced to a three-test suspension for making derogatory remarks towards Symonds. The decision angered the Indian management because there was no proof to back up the allegation that Harbhajan had used racial words.
