Monty Panesar’s epic delivery
In the memorable 2012/13 series, England achieved a historic 2-1 victory over India, marking the last time a touring side won a series in India. While there were several heroes who contributed to this triumph, some standout performances left an indelible mark. Kevin Pietersen’s dazzling innings of 186 in the second Test, Alastair Cook’s three centuries, and Matt Prior’s impressive batting display of 258 runs at an average of 51.60, accompanied by his exceptional wicket-keeping skills, all played pivotal roles.
However, it was the spin duo of Monty Panesar and Graeme Swann who stood tallest among the contributors. Panesar claimed 17 wickets at an average of 26.82, while Swann secured 20 wickets at 24.75. Together, they accounted for 37 of the 55 wickets taken by the English bowlers throughout the series.
During the match in Mumbai, Tendulkar, the local lad appeared solid at the crease. Having confidently flicked a full-toss from Panesar earlier in the over, he then successfully defended two consecutive balls. However, it was the third delivery that left an everlasting impact. Pitching on leg-stump at a quicker pace than Panesar’s usual deliveries, the ball turned past Tendulkar’s bat and struck the top of the off-stump. This crucial wicket led to the dismantling of the Indian second innings, resulting in their dismissal for a mere 142 runs.

Panesar himself said later on, “It was a great ball. It was something that I would say was probably a better ball than Shane Warne.”
