Cricket Viral Video: The rivalry between Gautam Gambhir and Shahid Afridi, two cricketing stars who have faced off in memorable encounters, actually had its origins in a fierce contest dating back to 2007 in Kanpur, a fact lesser known to many.
Epic clash between Gambhir and Afridi
Gautam Gambhir and Shahid Afridi first crossed paths on the cricket field in the eagerly awaited match between India and Pakistan during the third One Day International (ODI) of a five-match series at Kanpur’s Green Park. The rivalry between these two players was ignited when a collision occurred while they attempted a single during the 20th over of India’s innings.
Prior to the collision, Gambhir had struck Afridi for a boundary, leading to a heated exchange of verbal taunts between the two players. The tension between them escalated even further after the collision, resulting in a verbal spat that drew the attention of on-field umpire Ian Gould. Subsequently, both players were fined by match referee Roshan Mahanama for their conduct.
In terms of their individual performances in the match, Gambhir scored 25 runs off 49 balls before getting dismissed by Abdur Rehman in the 27th over. On the other hand, Afridi struggled to make an impact, remaining wicketless and conceding 57 runs in seven overs while playing against the team led by MS Dhoni. Afridi’s struggles extended to his batting as well, as he was bowled by Irfan Pathan after managing only 12 runs from 7 deliveries.

Afridi and Gambhir faced fines, with Afridi being penalized a larger amount at 95% of his match fee, while Gambhir had to forfeit 65%. Although both players pleaded not guilty to the charges, match referee Roshan Mahanama deemed the collision, even if unintentional, as inappropriate.
In contrast, the Indian cricket team emerged victorious in the match with ease. Yuvraj Singh contributed significantly with 77 runs, and MS Dhoni added 49 runs to the total. The team’s success continued as they went on to win the series.
