Cricket Viral Video: During Lancashire’s match against Essex in the 2023 County Championship, Colin de Grandhomme received a penalty of five runs for throwing the ball at Matt Critchley, the Essex batter, in an inappropriate manner.
Intentional or unintentional
During the 26th over of the Essex first innings in a cricket match, Colin de Grandhomme bowled a good length ball on the middle stump that was punched back down to him by Matt Critchley, the Essex batter. While in his follow-through, de Grandhomme picked up the ball and threw it back at Critchley, who instinctively played a textbook backfoot defensive shot to protect himself. This action was deemed inappropriate, and as per law 42 of the MCC Laws of Cricket, Essex was awarded five penalty runs for the incident.
In cricket, Law 42 pertains to unacceptable conduct on the field and comprises four levels of offences, each carrying its own degree of sanctions and penalties. Colin de Grandhomme’s action was deemed a Level 2 offence under this law, which includes throwing the ball at a player, umpire, or any other person in a dangerous and inappropriate manner, among other things.
Colin de Grandhomme promptly apologized by putting his hand up in the air after throwing the ball at Matt Critchley, albeit not at a significant pace. The incident resulted in Lancashire conceding five penalty runs, but it had little effect on the game’s final outcome, as the match ended in a draw. Essex had a slight edge, taking a 12-run lead in the first innings, but Lancashire responded well in the second innings by piling up a score of 351-7. This set a target of 340 for Essex, who ended the fourth innings at 128-4. Nevertheless, the highlight of the game was Jimmy Anderson dismissing Sir Alastair Cook twice.

Law 42.3.2 states that if any case Level 2 offence happens, ‘the umpire shall award five penalty runs to the opposing team,’ and ‘the umpire shall warn the offending player’s captain that any future Level 1 offence by any member of his/her team shall result in the award of five penalty runs to the opposing team.’
