Cricket Viral Video: Mohammad Azharuddin, an elegant and stylish batsman, was known for his wristy strokeplay and creative shot selection. However, on November 29, 1996, during a Test match against South Africa at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata, he displayed a completely different facet of his game.
Azharuddin smashes a blistering ton
At the start of his innings, India were in trouble, having lost 7 wickets for just 161 runs in reply to South Africa’s mammoth first innings total of 428. The team was facing the prospect of being forced to follow on, and the crowd was on edge.
But Azharuddin had other plans. He strode to the crease with an air of determination and proceeded to unleash a brutal and fiery assault on the South African bowlers. He attacked every ball with ferocity, smashing boundaries to all parts of the ground. The crowd was electrified by his aggression and the noise level at the stadium reached a fever pitch.
Azharuddin’s aggression reached its zenith in an over bowled by debutant Lance Klusener. The young bowler was taken aback by the sheer force of Azharuddin’s hitting as he was dispatched to the boundary five times in a row. The veteran batsman was in complete command of the situation, and it seemed as though nothing could stop him.
Azharuddin’s partnership with Anil Kumble was the turning point of the match. The two batsmen added 161 runs for the 8th wicket, with Azharuddin leading the charge. His century came in just 74 deliveries, which was a remarkable feat considering the pressure that he was under. His innings was a masterclass in controlled aggression, as he combined brute force with impeccable timing and placement.

In the end, Azharuddin fell for a well-deserved 109 off just 79 balls, with 18 fours and a six. He had single-handedly lifted India from the brink of disaster to a respectable total of 329, which allowed them to avoid the follow-on. His knock was hailed as one of the greatest Test innings ever played, and it cemented his reputation as one of the most talented and versatile batsmen of his generation.
Despite Azharuddin’s heroics, South Africa went on to win the match by a huge margin of 329 runs, thanks to bowling performance by Klusener in the second innings. However, the Kolkata crowd will always remember Azharuddin’s innings as a testament to his skill, courage, and fighting spirit.
