Cricket Viral Video: The rivalry between Gautam Gambhir and Shahid Afridi is widely known. Both of them have been star players for their countries and have played several good knocks against each other too. However, many don’t know, that this intense rivalry actually began way back in Kanpur in 2007.
First clash between Gambhir and Afridi
The first encounter between Gambhir and Afridi occurred on the cricket pitch during a highly-anticipated match between Team India and their fierce rivals, Pakistan. Specifically, the third One Day International (ODI) of the five-match series took place at Kanpur’s Green Park. The clash between the two players began when Gambhir and Afridi collided with each other while taking a single during the 20th over of India’s innings.
Prior to the collision, Gambhir had hit Afridi for a boundary, leading to a heated exchange of insults between the two players. The tension between them escalated even further after the collision, with Afridi and Gambhir engaging in a verbal spat that caught the attention of on-field umpire Ian Gould. Following the incident, both cricketers were fined by match referee Roshan Mahanama for their behaviour.
Coming to the match, Gambhir managed to score 25 runs off 49 balls before being dismissed by Abdur Rehman in the 27th over. Meanwhile, Afridi struggled to make an impact, going wicketless and conceding 57 runs in seven overs against the side led by MS Dhoni. Afridi’s struggles extended to his batting, as he was bowled by Irfan Pathan after scoring just 12 runs off 7 balls.

Afridi and Gambhir were both fined a portion of their match fees, with Afridi receiving a larger fine of 95% and Gambhir having to forfeit 65%. Despite both players pleading not guilty to the charges, match referee Roshan Mahanama believed that the collision between the two was inappropriate, even if it was accidental.
However, Men in Blue won the match easily. Yuvraj scored 77 runs in the match while Dhoni scored 49 runs. The team also went on to win the series later.
