Cricket Viral Video: During the inaugural Test of the 1998–1999 Asian Test Championship, Sachin Tendulkar was dismissed due to a collision with Shoaib Akhtar, failing to make it to the crease, which led to rising tensions among the spectators in Kolkata, ultimately resulting in an unfortunate escalation of the situation.
What had happened?
This particular incident occurred during the fourth Test inning when India was chasing a target of 279 and had reached a score of 143-2. Tendulkar’s presence was highly cherished by Indian supporters, especially after his remarkable 136 in challenging conditions during a recent Chennai Test. In the first innings at Eden Gardens, Tendulkar was dismissed for a duck by a fiery yorker from Akhtar, who later claimed to Wisden India that Tendulkar’s dismissal had brought him fame.
During the second innings, Wasim Akram bowled to Sachin, who played a shot to deep mid-wicket. Nadeem Khan made a quick run to retrieve the ball and unexpectedly threw it towards the bowler’s end, describing the runout as a fortunate accident. The shot by Tendulkar was well-executed, and there was an opportunity for an easy three runs, but Tendulkar appeared to be not fully focused on the ball or the Pakistani field.
To catch the ball, Akhtar, the fielder, had to move away from the stumps, resulting in a collision as he had his back turned to Tendulkar. The throw from the deep hit the stumps at the same time. Wasim Akram and Moin Khan appealed intensely, Akhtar clutched his back, and Tendulkar seemed convinced that he had maintained his position.
