Cricket Viral Video: Fielding is an integral part of cricket and does catches. There is even a proverb saying, ‘Catches win Matches’. Do you know there, was once a catch taken by an Aussie fielder that changed fielding forever or at least how we see the standards of fielding? It is believed to be the most controversial catch ever, with some also saying that Aussies actually cheated to get a wicket. Read on below to know more about it.
The controversial catch by Greg Dyer
Greg Dyer was a crucial member of the Australian cricket team during his peak. His side also won the 1987 World cup and he played an important role in it. Going by his form, he was selected for a test series against New Zealand. He was a significant player for the team as he took 6 catches in the first match and scored 8 runs, giving them a much-needed victory. In the second test also, he scored 60 runs which eventually went on to be a draw.
However, an interesting moment happened in the third test. In the first innings, the team didn’t start well as they lost one of their players, Phil Horne, early on. However, John Wright and Andrew Jones played well and managed to score more than 100 runs, stabilizing the team’s position. But then, Craig McDermott managed to make Andrew Jones make a mistake, causing him to hit the ball into the hands of the keeper, Greg Dyer.
During this time, cricket was considered a game for gentlemen, and players usually followed ethical standards. But in this situation, Dyer did something unethical as he fumbled to catch the ball and picked it up again to celebrate. The replays clearly showed that he caught the ball but dropped it and while he was on ground, he sneakily picked it up again, proving the incident to be a shameful one.

Australia managed to draw the test match somehow. However, the incident did not go well with cricketing community. Aussie skipper Allan Donald and New Zealand Cricket manager also criticised his celebration post taking the catch. His career eventually did not last long as he was frequently dropped from the team later.
