Cricket Viral Video: The first Hero Cup semifinal in 1993 was both exciting and juvenile to all Indian cricket fans. On November 24, 1993, Eden Gardens hosted the contest. After winning the toss at Eden Gardens, Mohammad Azharuddin’s Indian team decided to bat first against South Africa. The Indian team’s batting experienced a collapse in front of a large crowd, as they were dismissed for 195 runs in their allotted 50 overs.

However, by scoring 90 runs and serving as India’s lone fighter, Azharuddin played the captain’s knock. As a response, India was able to maintain a close situation with just few opportunities for the batsmen to score freely. When it came down to it, the situation called for 6 runs off the final over with 2 wickets in hand. Things had been building up steadily.
The Indian captain had to make a clear decision regarding who should bowl the game’s final over and help the side advance to the final. And Azharuddin, who was well-known for his unconventional tactics, pulled off a startling play by giving the ball to the then-young Sachin Tendulkar. The regular bowlers, such as Srinath, Manoj Prabhakar, and even Kapil Dev, were passed over in favour of Sachin.
Azhar chose to take such a daring risk because he wanted to slow down the speed of the ball. Sachin, as it turned out, concentrated on the essentials and attempted to bowl consistently without trying to experiment much, and it paid off for India—a true blessing in disguise.

They were able to hold on to even 5 runs off the final over, and Sachin only gave up 3 runs in the final over. It was probably one of India’s most stunning triumphs and is still remembered today. India ultimately defeated West Indies in the final of that year’s Hero Cup by 102 runs.
