Tendulkar was renowned for his graceful and elegant batting style, but he also proved to be a valuable bowler for India, especially during the One Day International format.

Tendulkar: The underrated bowler

Tendulkar has 154 wickets from his 463 ODI matches, including two five-wicket hauls, which highlights his versatility and multi-dimensional capabilities. Despite his impressive bowling figures, Tendulkar’s career as a bowler was cut short by a persistent tennis elbow injury that prevented him from taking more wickets.

However, one of the standout moments of his bowling career was on April 1, 1998, in Kochi, when he produced the best figures of his ODI career against Australia. In a match that India went on to win, Tendulkar put in a remarkable bowling performance that will be forever remembered by Indian cricket fans.

India had set Australia a challenging target of 310 runs, which was built on strong contributions from batsmen like Mohammad Azharuddin, Ajay Jadeja, and Hrishikesh Kanitkar. Unfortunately, Tendulkar himself had a lean day with the bat, as he was dismissed for just 8 runs.

Despite Tendulkar’s poor batting performance, he redeemed himself with his fantastic bowling display. With Australia cruising towards the target, captain Mohammad Azharuddin handed the ball to Tendulkar, who rose to the occasion with a spellbinding performance. In his ten overs, he took 5 wickets for 32 runs, removing key players such as Steve Waugh, Michael Bevan, Darren Lehmann, and Damien Martyn. This inspired display of bowling helped India secure a 41-run victory and earned Tendulkar the ‘Player of the Match’ award.
