Cricket Viral Video: During India’s tour of South Africa in 2001, Sachin Tendulkar faced a rare allegation of tampering with the ball during the second Test in Port Elizabeth. TV footage captured the Little Master scratching the surface of the ball, a clear violation of ICC rules.
Stain on Sachin’s career
Match referee Mike Denness acted swiftly and suspended Tendulkar and five other players, including Indian captain Sourav Ganguly. The suspension of Tendulkar caused a massive uproar in India, with many accusing Denness of racism. The issue was even discussed in the Parliament of India. And now this incident is going rounds on social media. The incident happened during the second match of the tour which took place between 16-20 November, 2001.
The BCCI demanded the removal of Denness from the third Test, but the ICC refused, resulting in the match being played without the match referee. However, the ICC labelled it an unofficial match. Fortunately, Tendulkar’s ban was eventually overturned by the ICC, who ruled that he had been cleaning the ball without the umpire’s permission, rather than tampering with it. Other players included Ganguly, Sehwag, Harbhajan, Deep Dasgupta.
Despite the controversy, Tendulkar’s legacy remains untarnished, with over 34,000 international runs and 100 centuries in international cricket. His dedication, skill, and sportsmanship continue to inspire players and fans alike.
