Cricket Viral Video: Sportsmanship is a crucial part of every game. Despite its humanitarian and positive outlook it can also affect the team negatively. One such incident took place during the 1987 ODI World Cup when Kapil Dev’s single decision cost India one run and the Men in Blue eventually lost the match by just one run as well.

On October 9, 1987, an intense cricket match unfolded between India and Australia in Chennai as part of a World Cup group stage game. Australia set a total of 270/6 on the scoreboard. India, during their chase, initially seemed strong at 207/2, but faced a stumble and ended up at 265/9. Eventually, the team was dismissed for 269. The result was an incredibly close victory for the visiting Australian team, winning by a mere one run. However, the focus of this account is not on the dramatic climax of the match. Instead, it sheds light on a significant incident where the sportsmanlike action of India’s captain led to an unexpected loss for Team India.

Kapil Dev allows for six

During the match, Dean Jones struck a shot off Maninder Singh towards the long-on area. Ravi Shastri, attempting to catch the ball, narrowly missed. Based on Shastri’s reaction, the umpire awarded four runs to the Australian team. Kiran More, the wicketkeeper, concurred with Shastri’s assessment that it wasn’t a six. On the other hand, Dean Jones was confident that his shot had cleared the boundary for a six.

During the break between innings, the Australian manager expressed his strong discontent with the situation. This led to the umpires engaging with the team management and seeking input from Kapil Dev, the Indian captain. In a truly commendable act of sportsmanship, Kapil Dev made a significant decision. He chose to acknowledge the Australian claim that the shot by Dean Jones was indeed a six, and consequently, the score was adjusted from 268 to 270.

As the match unfolded, Team India ended up being dismissed for a total of 269 runs. In a cruel twist of fate, those additional 2 runs that were awarded as a result of Kapil Dev’s sportsmanlike gesture proved to be the decisive factor. The match concluded with a one-run victory for Australia, showing the importance of that one run in the end.
