Cricket Viral Video: The 1999 Coca-Cola Cup triangular ODI tournament was a classic example of the triangular ODI format that characterized cricket during that era. The participating teams were India, England, and Pakistan. Pakistan had already achieved comprehensive victories over both India and England before this match. In one of the match between India and England, the English side needed 27 runs to win in 24 balls. At this crucial stage of the match, stand-in captain Ajay Jadeja decided to bring himself on to bowl. England’s batting lineup faltered during Jadeja’s over, leading to their eventual defeat.

Ajay Jadeja’s Genius spell
India posted a total of 222-5 with S Ramesh scoring 60 and captain Mohammad Azharuddin remaining unbeaten at 74. England’s Darren Gough and Andrew Flintoff claimed two wickets each while Ajay Jadeja contributed 21 runs from 27 balls.
In response, England had a rocky start, becoming 25-2 and then 80-4. Neil Fairbrother’s knock of 57 and his partnership of 73 with Flintoff (32) put England back on track. However, despite the excellent bowling performance of Venkatesh Prasad (3-28 in 10 overs), England were still in the game after 46 overs, with Fairbrother and Robert Croft at the crease.
Jadeja had never bowled in Test cricket and had only bowled eight balls in ODIs in the previous year and a half, without taking any wickets. He had a record of taking a wicket every 85 balls in ODIs until that point, making it an unexpected move. He came to bowl when England required 24 off 27 balls. Croft missed Jadeja’s first ball as he stepped out, and the ball passed between him and the stumps. He stepped out again, and substitute fielder Hrishikesh Kanitkar ran to his left from long off to take the catch.
Jadeja then bowled a wide delivery outside the leg stump. He appealed for a caught-behind off the next delivery against Fairbrother, and the appeal was successful. At this point, Gough joined Ian Austin and chipped the next ball to mid-wicket. Although Sourav Ganguly couldn’t hold on to the catch, the next ball hit Gough on the pad, and the Indians appealed. However, Gough survived.

After that game-changing over by Ajay Jadeja, England were left struggling at 199/9, with no realistic hope of recovering from that position. Jadeja was declared the man of the match, a well-deserved recognition of his crucial contribution to India’s victory. Led by Mohammad Azharuddin, the Indian team ultimately triumphed over England by a margin of 20 runs.
