Cricket Viral Video: In the fourth Test match between India and West Indies held in St. John’s, Antigua, in 2002, a truly remarkable moment unfolded in sports history. The bowling great Anil Kumble came to field with a broken jaw and even managed to pick up wickets.
Anil Kumble’s sheer determination
The West Indies won the toss and opted to take the field first. Anil Kumble was at the crease when India was in a struggling position, having lost five wickets with a total of 235 runs on the board. Mervyn Dillon, bowling from one end, resorted to a classic strategy often employed against lower-order batsmen by unleashing a fierce bouncer.
Regrettably, Kumble was caught unawares and momentarily lost sight of the oncoming delivery. The cricket ball struck him on the jaw, resulting in substantial injury. Swiftly, he was taken to the hospital for an X-ray, which confirmed a fractured jaw and dislocated teeth. Plans were made for Kumble to return to Bangalore the next day for a surgical procedure to address his injuries.
The injury dealt a severe setback to the Indian cricket team, given that Kumble was the linchpin of the Indian bowling attack. Despite grappling with excruciating pain and the looming threat of further injury, Kumble exhibited unwavering resolve to participate in the match. Despite the concern expressed by the Indian physiotherapist, Andrew Leipus, Kumble remained steadfast in his determination to take the field and bowl on the following day. He said, “At least I can now go home with the thought that I tried my best.”
