In the ongoing three-match ODI series between Afghanistan and Pakistan, officially hosted by Afghanistan but played in Sri Lanka, the first ODI saw Pakistan winning the toss and choosing to bat. However, Pakistan had a rocky beginning to their innings. Fakhar Zaman, who hasn’t been in the best of form recently, with only 156 runs at an average of 22.3 in seven matches during the Lanka Premier League, fell early in the innings.
His dismissal occurred in the opening over, delivered by left-arm fast bowler Fazalhaq Farooqi. Farooqi employed a strategy of targeting Fakhar’s stumps during the initial half of the over, setting up the left-hander for a drive. He then enticed Fakhar with an out-swinging half-volley that was well outside off. Fakhar, lured by the delivery, attempted a drive without getting close to making contact. The result was a thick edge that headed towards second slip, where Rahmat Shah was stationed.
However, Rahmat Shah couldn’t catch the ball cleanly; it slipped through his fingers and went airborne. Fortunately for Afghanistan, the ball went right to the hands of Mohammad Nabi, who was positioned at first slip. Nabi made the catch comfortably, and afterward, he directed an annoyed glare at Rahmat Shah. In a playful yet pointed gesture, Nabi pretended to throw the ball at Rahmat, highlighting the potential of an easy catch being dropped.

Following Fakhar Zaman’s dismissal, Mujeeb Ur Rahman managed to dismiss both Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan through lbw decisions in his initial spell. This sequence of events left Pakistan struggling at a score of 46-3 after the completion of 10 overs. However, they eventually won the match by 142 runs as Pakistan scored 201 runs and bowled out Afghanistan for 59 runs.
