Cricket Viral Video: The Eden Gardens in Kolkata, India, is known for its stunning history in cricket, but it was marred by a dark incident in 1996 during the Cricket World Cup semifinal between India and Sri Lanka when fan violence disrupted the match. This regrettable episode was captured on camera and continues to resurface on social media.
Fans set stands ablaze
The match at Eden Gardens in Kolkata featured India’s formidable batting lineup, led by the legendary Sachin Tendulkar, facing off against Sri Lanka’s formidable bowling attack, setting the stage for an anticipated showdown. The Kolkata crowd was buzzing with enthusiasm and hope as they looked forward to their team’s advancement to the final. Unfortunately, the events that happened on the field that day were far from a balanced contest.
Following a strong beginning, India’s batting lineup suffered a dramatic collapse, plummeting from 98/2 to a dismal 120/8. The passionate supporters, who had been fervently backing their team, were left disheartened and frustrated. Unfortunately, a faction of them turned to violence, throwing bottles onto the field and even setting parts of the stands ablaze.
In response to the escalating violence, the match referee, Clive Lloyd, had no choice but to remove the players from the field and halt the game. Despite numerous efforts to resume play, Lloyd ultimately had to declare Sri Lanka the winners by default.
