Cristiano Ronaldo: Fernando Santos, Portugal’s manager, took the big decision to sideline Cristiano Ronaldo before Portugal’s quarterfinal match against Switzerland. Ronaldo’s absence from the starting lineup caused a social media frenzy among football fans and analysts, who were curious as to what had happened between the Portugal captain and his manager. Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville advised Cristiano Ronaldo to cease “sulking” shortly after the development.
Gary Neville slams Cristiano Ronaldo
Recent criticism of Ronald from Neville has increased, particularly after the five-time Ballon d’Or winner began to act distant from Erik Ten Hag, the manager of Manchester United. The Portuguese manager’s decision to bench Ronaldo has Neville questioning whether the managers of Juventus and Manchester United were also “wrong” in their decisions. Neville has previously spoken out against Ronaldo.
Neville, a Manchester United teammate of Ronaldo’s for a brief time, appealed with the Portuguese to protect his “short-term legacy” and quit pouting so much.
Neville urges Ronaldo to protect his legacy
“It wouldn’t surprise me if he came on tonight and scored the winner, but the petulance, the stomping around, the sulking it’s got to stop because it doesn’t reflect well on him at all.
“His long term legacy is set, he’s protected. He’s one of the great all time players but in the short term, he’s got to do a lot better, because is the Juventus manager wrong? The Manchester United manager wrong? And now is the Portugal manager wrong? There’s three of them that now have done the same thing with him.”
In the Portugal vs. Switzerland game, Cristiano Ronaldo’s team won easily to advance to the quarterfinals.
