Danushka Gunathilaka Sri Lanka Cricket suspends rape-accused player after he got arrested in Australia Details here

Danushka Gunathilaka: On Monday, Sri Lanka Cricket announced that the country’s cricket board’s executive committee had decided to immediately suspend national player Danushka Gunathilaka from all forms of the game. They have also specified that will stop considering him for any selections after learning that the star batter had been detained and accused of sexual assault in Australia.

In an official release, Sri Lanka Cricket said “Furthermore, Sri Lanka Cricket will take the necessary steps to promptly carry out an inquiry into the alleged offense, and, upon conclusion of the aforementioned court case in Australia, steps will be taken to penalize the said player if found guilty.”

Continuing further, it said “Sri Lanka Cricket wishes to emphasise that it t adopts a “zero tolerance” policy for any such conduct by a player and will provide all the required support to the Australian law enforcement authorities to carry out an impartial inquiry into the incident.”

After being accused with four charges of sexual assault, Gunathilaka appeared via video link in handcuffs before a Sydney court on Monday to request bail. In Downing Center Local Court, a screen displayed Gunathilaka, who spoke only to confirm his identity. He was sitting in a detention facility in Sydney while wearing a grey T-shirt. Ananda Amaranath, the batter’s attorney, announced that the 31-year-old would be eligible for bail.

Before considering the bail request, Magistrate Robert Williams briefly postponed the proceedings. According to the prosecution, some information that could be used to identify the alleged victim will be withheld from publication.

After the national team’s Twenty20 World Cup loss to England on Sunday, police detained and charged Gunathilaka.
