David Warner: Candice Warner has accused Cricket Australia (CA) of attempting to completely ‘wipe’ her husband, David Warner, from the national team after the Sandpaper-gate scandal. David, the Australian opening batsman, was banned by CA from holding any leadership positions due to his involvement in the ball-tampering scandal that took place in Cape Town in 2018.
What did David Warner’s wife say?
During the third Test match against South Africa, the former Australia captain, Steve Smith, and the then Test vice-captain, Warner, urged batter Cameron Bancroft to tamper with the ball using a piece of sandpaper. As a result of this incident, Bancroft was suspended from playing for nine months, while Smith and Warner received bans of one year each. Smith was prohibited from holding any leadership position for two years, whereas Warner was handed a lifetime ban.
During an interview on The Matty Johns Podcast, Candice Warner claimed that Cricket Australia failed to provide support to her husband, David Warner, when he departed from the hotel in South Africa.
She stated, “‘There was no support. Basically from when we left the hotel in South Africa, David was wiped. There was no Cricket Australia official helping him. There was nothing. It’s like: ‘Basically you fend for yourself now’. It was basically fended for yourself, see you later. Thanks for your services probably, we’re going to do our best for you not to ever come back and play cricket for our country again. We’re going to blame you for everything. And that’s what they did.”
Continuing further, she said, “I was even told by someone within Cricket Australia at the time within the team that it’s in the team’s best interest to keep your mouth shut. That fired me up, and David up…we have so much respect for the team, but we’re also human beings. There was no help, at all. It’s sad, because I learnt to just accept it.”
David Warner and Captaincy ban
Cricket Australia made changes to its code of conduct to enable the Australian opener to request a review of his punishment. However, after a month had passed, an independent panel of code-of-conduct commissioners confirmed the original decision. Warner later withdrew his appeal against the captaincy ban, citing the Review Panel’s attempt at a “public lynching.”
