Three senior male wrestlers, including world championship silver-medalist, Deepak Punia, who had reported to the National camp at the SAI centre, have tested positive for the covid-19.
Besides Puniya(86kg), the other wrestlers who have contracted the virus are Navin(65kg) and Krishan (125kg).
“Three senior men’s wrestlers, who had reported to the National Wrestling Camp at SAI Centre in Sonepat, have tested positive for COVID -19 virus,” the nodal sports body said in a statement.
“All wrestlers were tested upon arrival as per the SAI SOP for resumption of sports activities,” said the statement.
The three wrestlers “have been moved to a SAI empanelled hospital as a precautionary measure and for further monitoring,” the statement further added.
World medalist Punia, was set to bound for Tokyo Olympic this year until the event was halted due to the covid-19 pandemic.
Meanwhile, the training at the SAI camp also paused due to the outbreak of the novel coronavirus and was recently resumed from September 1.
Deepak Punia last year became the first Indian to clich a gold medal at the Junior World Championships in 18 years. He was also named United World Wrestling’s Junior Freestyle Wrestler of the Year last year.
With his silver at the world championship, Punia had bagged an Olympic quota for himself.
Earlier, senior women wrestler Vinesh Phogat had tested positive for the coronavirus. She revealed the information after recovering from the virus.
