Deepti Sharma did a run-out in the final match of India vs Australia Women series; the run-out of Charlie Dean at non-striker’s end has opened a can of worms. The mode of dismissal is very legal but is seen by many against the ‘Spirit of Cricket’. The cricket laws clearly state that a bowler can run out the non-striker if he or she is found to be leaving the crease before the ball has left the bowler’s hands. It is a very simple rule; it has ended up dividing the masses. In the Deepti Sharma case, some are applauding Deepti for using the rules of the game, but some cricket fans and fraternity deems it to be against Spirit of Cricket.

We have planned the dismissal, says Deepti
After her arrival in the country, Deepti said that the dismissal of Charlie Dean’s dismissal was planned and we had warned her. She added further, “We did all the things as per rules and guidelines. We told umpires as well but she was there. We could not do much. Every team wants to win and we want to win the match and give Jhulan Goswami a good farewell. But England all-rounder Charlie Dean said that she did not get any warning. Those who watched the match could easily make out whether a warning was issued to England all-rounder or not.
Were India Right?
The MCC moved the run-out at the non-striker’s end from Law 41 ‘Unfair Play’ to Law 38 ‘Run Out’. The change in the laws came into effect from October 1, 2022, clarifying and placing the onus on batters to ensure that they don’t leave the crease before the ball leaves the hand of the bowler. Deepti’s action was justified by the law that her decision is in place and the decision was paced by her captain Harmanpreet to appeal for it.
