Dipa Karmakar: Celebrated Indian gymnast Dipa Karmakar, who narrowly missed a bronze medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics, has announced her retirement from competitive gymnastics. The 31-year-old athlete, who made history as the first Indian female gymnast to compete at the Olympics, shared the news in a heartfelt statement on Monday.

Karmakar, known for her remarkable performance in the vault event at the Rio Olympics, finished in fourth place, missing out on a medal by just 0.15 points. Despite the near miss, her achievement brought gymnastics into the spotlight in India and inspired a new generation of athletes.
“After much thought and reflection, I have decided to retire from competitive gymnastics. This is not an easy decision, but it feels like the right time,” Karmakar said. “Gymnastics has been at the center of my life for as long as I can remember, and I am grateful for every moment—the highs, the lows, and everything in between.”
Karmakar’s legacy as a pioneer in Indian gymnastics and her contribution to the sport will be remembered for years to come.
