Ducking the Record; Top 5 Players with the Most ICC ODI World Cup Ducks!

ICC ODI World Cup: Cricket, a captivating sport marked by remarkable highs and challenging lows, includes not only spectacular sixes and centuries but also a less glamorous yet significant record – the number of ducks, showing a batsman’s dismissals without scoring a run. In the world of ODI cricket, we explore the top five players who have the most ducks in the ICC ODI World Cup.

Five players with most ducks

1. Nathan Astle

Leading the unfortunate list is New Zealand’s Nathan Astle, a prolific run-scorer for the Kiwis from 1996 to 2003, who, despite amassing 403 runs in 22 ICC ODI World Cup innings, was out for a duck on five times due to his aggressive playing style, which, although occasionally resulting in early dismissals, made him a crucial component of New Zealand’s batting lineup.

2. Ijaz Ahmed

Tied with Astle’s unfortunate record of five ICC ODI World Cup ducks is Pakistan’s Ijaz Ahmed. Across 26 innings from 1987 to 1999, Ijaz scored a total of 516 runs, showing some explosive performances. However, his tendency to go for big shots early in innings occasionally led to his downfall, resulting in five ducks. Nonetheless, Ijaz remains a respected figure in Pakistan’s cricket history.

3. Kyle McCallan

Taking the third spot on this list is Ireland’s Kyle McCallan. McCallan’s ICC ODI World Cup stint was brief, spanning 8 innings in the 2007 tournament. Despite scoring only 33 runs, he scored four ducks during this period. It’s worth noting that Ireland was a relatively new entrant in the tournament, and McCallan’s struggles with the bat can be attributed in part to his primary role as a bowler.

4. Darren Bravo

Sharing the third position is West Indies’ Darren Bravo. Between 2011 and 2019, Bravo participated in 11 World Cup innings, accumulating a total of 207 runs. However, his natural talent was occasionally overshadowed by four instances of getting dismissed without scoring. Despite his inconsistency, Bravo’s potential for substantial contributions ensured his place in the West Indies lineup.

5. Keith Arthurton

The final player on this list is another West Indian, Keith Arthurton, who also recorded four ICC ODI World Cup ducks. Arthurton played 13 innings between 1992 and 1999, amassing a total of 241 runs. Despite his reputation for elegant stroke play, Arthurton’s World Cup outings were marred by these four instances of getting dismissed without scoring.
