Dwaine Pretorius: Proteas star announces immediate retirement from international cricket, sends shockwave amongst fans

Dwaine Pretorius: All-around cricketer Dwaine Pretorius from South Africa has announced his abrupt retirement from international cricket. With 30 T20 Internationals, 27 ODIs, and three Tests under his belt, Dwaine Pretorius has earned 60 caps for South Africa in all three forms. Pretorius has shown his skill with the bat and the ball in the international setting, amassing 1895 runs and taking 77 wickets across various formats.

Dwaine Pretorius stint in international cricket

Pretorius was a regular in South Africa’s limited-over cricket after making his international debut in 2016. He was a member of the teams for the 2019 and 2021 ICC Men’s T20 World Cups of Cricket, respectively.

With his 5-17 against Pakistan in 2021, Pretorius set the record for the greatest T20I bowling stats by a South African. Pretorius had an impact in the T20I arena. Later that year, in the UAE for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, he went on to take nine wickets. He has also amassed 261 runs with a strike rate of 164.15.

Dwaine Pretorius thanks Faf and supporters

In the official statement, he said “A few days ago, I made one of the toughest decisions of my cricketing career. I have decided to retire from all forms of international cricket. Growing up, my only goal in life was to play for the Proteas. I didn’t know how it was going to happen, but God gave me a talent and a serious will to succeed. The rest was in his hands. I am shifting my focus to T20 and other shorter formats for the rest of my career.”

Pretorious expressed his appreciation for his family’s help and gave former South Africa captain Faf Du Plessis credit for improving him as a player. He said that each time he stood in for the Proteas, he gave his all for them. He expressed gratitude to his followers for their love and support in making his career “extra special.”
