After leading the Blackcaps for almost a decade, Kane Williamson has finally decided to step down as the skipper of the New Zealand team. Williamson has been part of the Kiwi side for more than a decade now and has been leading them for most of the part.
This decision came on the back of a disastrous exit from the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. While this might seem shocking, Williamson has taken this decision to prolong his international career.
He has also decided to not take New Zealand’s central contract for the 2024-25 season. Lockie Ferguson has also made the same decision because the Kiwis are scheduled to play very few matches in the summer.
Kane Williamson Will Return
Williamson made sure to let everyone know that he has not lost interest in International cricket. He still wants to serve New Zealand and will accept the central contract shortly.
He stated “Playing for New Zealand is something I treasure, and my desire to give back to the team remains undiminished. However, pursuing an overseas opportunity during the New Zealand summer means I’m unable to accept a central contract offer.”
“My life outside cricket has changed however – spending more time with my family and enjoying experiences with them at home or abroad is something that’s even more important to me.”
Right Decision?
While Kane Williamson will be missed, there is no doubt that he has had a shocking ICC T20 World Cup 2024. He performed underwhelmingly with the bat and was not impressive with his captaincy as well.
The fans were demanding Williamson to be sacked from the T20I cricket. So, in hindsight, this might be the right decision as the new guard is more than ready and eager to replace him and prove themselves in T20Is.
