ENG vs IRE: On Wednesday, October 26 in Melbourne, in their Super 12 encounter of the T20 World Cup 2022, Ireland stunned England, 11 years after their renowned victory over their neighbours in Bengaluru. Ireland was able to secure 2 significant points thanks to a valiant fifty from skipper Andrew Balbirnie and a disciplined bowling performance with little assistance from the weather gods.
The Super 12’s Group 1, known as the Group of Death due to the two powerhouse teams, Australia and England, suffering defeats in each of their opening two matches, is living up to its name.
In May 2010, Ireland and England played their first T20I, and Balbirnie’s squad won. It should be noted that Ireland advanced to the Super 12 after defeating the two-time champion West Indies in Round 1 earlier in October.
When play was halted due to rain, England had scored 105/5 in 14.3 overs—10 minutes before the deadline. Moeen Ali’s pursuit of the Irish attack after their top-order failed was devastating for England. At 14.3 overs, England was 5 runs short of the needed total, and Melbourne’s rainstorm forced the cancellation of the game.
Ireland’s skipper Andrew Balbirnie and Paul Stirling defeated England’s new-ball bowlers during the powerplay in the Super 12 game, rewarding Ireland for their courageous strategy. Mark Wood’s special caused Stirling to lose for just 14, but Lorcan Tucker, who came in at No. 3, took on the England bowlers with help from his skipper.
Though, they later made 157, it was horrendous to say as they went from 103/1 to 157- all out in 19.2 overs. However, the Irish bowling attack ensured they are never out of the game as they restricted England batsman from scoring runs. Rain gods too played their part in ensuring a smoothening victory of Ireland.
