ENG Vs SA ICC ODI World Cup 2023: Well, this was an anti-climatic finish, wasn’t it? Ben Stokes was one of the most hyped-up players coming into the ICC ODI World Cup 2023.
And why wouldn’t he be? The prodigal son of England, the hero of the 2019 ODI World Cup was making his return in white ball cricket after a long time. The clutch-man was back in Blue colors to make sure his country won the big prize.
Against South Africa, chasing 400 runs, it was the perfect opportunity for Ben Stokes to show everyone why he is considered the best. But what we got was very disappointing and underwhelming.
ENG Vs SA ICC ODI World Cup 2023: Disastrous Comeback
Stokes came out to bat in the 4th over itself as England lost its first two wickets very quickly. The defending champions were chasing a target of 400 runs and all eyes were on Ben Stokes.
After all, he has saved the Three Lions multiple times in the past. Whenever his country needed him, he was there, no matter how dire the conditions were. When he is on the crease, nothing is impossible.
But Kagiso Rabada had other plans. He made sure that no one would ruin this Proteas party and dismissed Ben Stokes on just 5 runs. A sensational reflexive catch by Rabada himself sent Stokes back to the pavilion and England in a slump.
England In Trouble
The Proteas made light work of the defending champions and won the match by 229 runs. This is one of the biggest wins in World Cup history. And with this loss, things are looking grim for the English squad.
This is England’s third loss in 4th match and they are currently 9th in the points table. With 5 matches left, they need to win all the remaining matches which is looking impossible considering India and Australia are remaining.
