ENG VS SL ICC ODI World Cup 2023: England team and run-outs are not a good match. Let’s just say that being aloof while batting is the ongoing trend with English batsmen this year. We saw that in this World Cup once again.
The infamous Jonny Bairstow dismissal in Ashes 2023 is still fresh in everyone’s mind. That was one of the most scandalous moments of the cricket this year and Sri Lanka might have repeated that once again.
But this time, England has no one to complain to and put blame on instead of themselves. It was Kusal Mendis’s brilliant presence of mind and Adil Rashid’s aloofness that created the Jonny Bairstow at the non-striker’s end.
Brilliant Presence Of Mind
England was already struggling in the 31st over, having lost 8 wickets at a score of only 148. David Wiley was trying to rebuild something with Adil Rashid. That is when Kusal Mendis went ahead and brought Mahesh Theekshana into the attack.
Theekshana bowled a wide on the last ball of the 32nd over. Wiley let the ball pass him and Mendis collected it comfortably. But what Mendis did after that can only be described as sublime and bizarre at the same time.
No one noticed that Adil Rashid was still out of the crease. No one except Mendis, who had the ball in his hands. He removed his gloves instantly and threw the ball towards the non-striker’s end. Rashid was not able to get back in the crease and the ball hit the stumps. Theekshana was shocked but knew it was out and appealed instantly. And that is how one of the most memorable moments of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 was made.
ENG VS SL ICC ODI World Cup 2023: Lacklustre England
England registered their lowest-ever total against Sri Lanka in World Cup history. It is also a fact that England has not defeated Sri Lanka in the World Cup since 1992 and it looks like it will remain the same this time around as well.
