Former Indian fast bowler Ajit Agarkar has become the new Chief Selector of Team India. After taking charge, Agarkar will chair the selection committee meeting to select the T20 squad for the West Indies tour. Agarkar will also be responsible for selecting the team for the 2023 World Cup.
The name of 45-year-old Ajit Agarkar was running in the forefront for this post. Earlier, Agarkar was a member of the coaching staff of Delhi Capitals. He was working as assistant bowling coach with head coach Ricky Ponting, but had resigned from this post recently.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had the last date of application for the post of Chief Selector was 30 June. Former Indian fast bowler Ajit Agarkar’s name was in the forefront for this post. The 45-year-old former Indian fast bowler Agarkar has played 26 Tests, 191 ODIs and 4 T20 Internationals. In this, he took 58 wickets, 288 wickets and three wickets respectively.

BCCI officially announced the appointment of Ajit Agarkar. The Cricket Advisory Committee had recommended the name of Ajit Agarkar. Ajit Agarkar’s term will start from July 5. When he will select the Indian men’s T20 team for the West Indies tour. Agarkar will now be in charge of team selection for big tournaments like the 50 over World Cup to be held in India as well as the T20 World Cup to be held next year.
A BCCI source said, “Agarkar was the only candidate who appeared for the interview. It was virtual as he is currently abroad on a family vacation. Former India fast bowler Ajit Agarkar on Tuesday appeared in a virtual interview with the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) headed by Ashok Malhotra and was appointed as the chairman of the senior selection committee.”
The post was vacant after the resignation of Chetan Sharma
Earlier, Chetan Sharma was working as the Chief Selector, but at the beginning of the year, a video of his sting operation came to the fore. After this, he had to resign from the post of Chief Selector of Team India. Since then Shivsundar Das is handling the responsibility of the acting chief selector. Three other members are also included with him.
Agarkar’s appointment will mean that there will be two selectors in the West Zone. Salil Ankola will be the other selector from West Zone. Apart from these, Subroto Banerjee from the Central region, S Sharath from the South and SS Das from the East will be the selectors.
