FIFA Club World Cup 2023: The FIFA Council has announced that the FIFA Club World Cup 2023 will be held in Saudi Arabia from December 12-22. The decision was unanimous and made just days after Real Madrid won the tournament in Morocco with a thrilling 5-3 victory over Al-Hilal, the first Saudi club to reach the final.
Saudi Arabia: New hub for football
This will mark only the sixth time the FIFA Club World Cup will be held since its inception in 2000, and Saudi Arabia is the host nation following Japan, the United Arab Emirates, Morocco, Brazil and Qatar. In a statement, FIFA said, “In relation to the FIFA Club World Cup 2023, which is due to be played under the current format with seven clubs, the FIFA Council unanimously appointed the Saudi Arabian Football Federation as tournament hosts from 12 to 22 December 2023.”
In addition, Saudi Arabia was recently awarded the hosting rights for the men’s Asian Cup 2027 and is currently bidding to host the Women’s Asian Cup for the first time in 2026. The FIFA Council has also confirmed a change in the format of the tournament, which will be expanded from 24 to 32 teams from June 2025. Europe will have 12 teams involved, while six teams from CONMEBOL, four each from CONCACAF, CAF and the AFC, one from the OFC, and the hosts will make up the remaining slots.
FIFA Club World Cup to begin from THIS date
Furthermore, the hosts of the FIFA World Cup 2026, namely Canada, Mexico, and the USA, will automatically qualify for the tournament as the joint hosts. As a result, their allocation of slots will be deducted from the overall allocation of six assigned to Concacaf.
