FIFA World Cup 2022: Argentina could face a serious issue in the crucial match against Croatia. Lionel Messi, the team’s captain, could receive a suspension and miss the significant game. After Messi spoke about match referee Antonio Mateu Lahoz with criticism, FIFA launched disciplinary action against him.
Argentina and Netherlands’ quarterfinal matchup was a brutal contest between the two powerful teams. The game’s lack of discipline was evident in numerous incidents involving players and coaching staff from both clubs. Antonio Mateu Lahoz, the referee, had to issue 16 yellow cards as a result of this.
Frequent brawls happened during the match
Other than verbal arguments, brawls that broke out during and after the game frequently involved players from both teams confronting one another. After the penalty shootout, Denzel Dumfries of the Netherlands was sent off the field due to the ferocity of the brawl and was given two yellow cards. Lionel Messi and Argentine goalkeeper Emi Martinez blasted the referee Antonio Mateu Lahoz following the game.
Following the harsh criticism, FIFA made the decision to initiate disciplinary measures against the Argentine Football Association and the relevant players. The possibility that Leo Messi may be disqualified from the semifinal match against Croatia if he is found guilty is therefore quite real.
FIFA is investigating on the matter
FIFA has begun an investigation against Argentina for allegedly violating articles 12 and 16—which, respectively, deal with order and security at sporting events and player and official misconduct—both of which are related to Argentina. There has been a breath on article 12 applied against the Dutch Football Association. Argentina defeated the Netherlands 4-3 on penalties Friday at Lusail Stadium following a 2-2 draw, setting a World Cup record for the most yellow cards handed in a match.
The Dutch battled back from two goals down to force extra time, which resulted in numerous public clashes and tense exchanges. According to a statement from FIFA, the allegations against the Argentina football association centre upon player and staff misconduct as well as “order and security at matches.”
What did Lionel Messi say earlier?
Lionel Messi had said, “I don’t want to talk about referees because then they will sanction you, but we were scared before the game because we knew what was coming [with Mateu Lahoz]. I can’t say what I think, but FIFA have to look at this. [FIFA] cannot put a referee like that on this game when he is not up to the level.”
