FIFA World Cup 2022: Croatia advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar after winning the first penalty shootout. During the shootout, Croatia only missed one penalty kick, compared to three missed by Japan.
Croatia won the Penalty shootout
After a 1-1 tie in regulation, there was a penalty shootout. In the extra period, no team managed to score. The 2018 champions struggled early on, and Celtic attacker Daizen Maeda rightfully gave Japan the lead just before halftime.
Both teams failed to score in extra time, and Croatia prevailed in the penalty shootout thanks to Dominik Livakovic’s three saves of Japan’s attempts and Mario Pasalic’s successful conversion of the game-winning penalty. Below is a video of the penalty shootout.

Japan failed to score single goal in penalty round
Ivan Perisic of Tottenham came inside the penalty box after the restart to head the game even for Zlatko Dalic’s seasoned team.
Heartbreakingly, Japan lost the game on penalties despite dominating Croatia for a large portion of regulation time, which finished in a 1-1 draw. Dominik Livakovic of Croatia made three saves as Mario Pasalic remained composed to convert the game-winning penalty.
Modric said, “It seems that we can’t do it without a drama. We are more than happy to reach the quarter-finals. It was a very difficult game against a very tough team.”
