FIFA World Cup 2022: From Mbappe to Messi – Players who won the iconic golden awards at the finale

FIFA World Cup 2022

FIFA World Cup 2022: the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar, Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe, and Emiliano Martinez took home the top individual honours. As Argentina went on to defeat France by 4-2 in penalties, they took home the trophy for the first time in 36 years. Significant part, however, of that was Messi finally being able to get hands on the trophy he desired life-long.

Messi won the Golden ball

Messi won the Golden Ball, given to the competition’s best player, only moments before collecting the World Cup title for the first time following Argentina’s thrilling penalty shootout victory over France.

He kissed the World Cup trophy on the podium while holding his own prize. Argentina lost the championship match against Germany 1-0 after extra time in Brazil in 2014, the same year that Messi won the Golden Ball.

But this time, the 35-year-old won the one trophy that had escaped him thus far throughout his illustrious career. Mbappe won the Silver Ball for second place, and Luka Modric, the 2018 Golden Ball winner, won the Bronze Ball for third.

Mbappe won the Golden Boot

Following his hat-trick in the championship match, Mbappe won the Golden Boot with eight goals, one more than Messi, a teammate at PSG who had scored twice that day. With Miroslav Klose’s record of 16 World Cup goals firmly in his sights, Mbappe now has 12 goals in just two competitions.

In 66 appearances for France, the 23-year-old has scored 36 goals and is solidifying his position as one of the best forwards in the world.

Martinez wins the Golden Glove

After stopping Kingsley Coman’s penalty in the shootout, Argentina’s Martinez won the Golden Glove award for best goalkeeper. Additionally, late in extra time, he made an outstanding stop to prevent Randal Kolo Muani from scoring a goal that would have given France its first lead.

With two saves in the penalty shootout, the Aston Villa goalkeeper saved Argentina’s match against the Netherlands in the quarterfinals.

Fernandez won the Best Young Player award

Enzo Fernandez won the Best Young Player prize in Qatar, making him another another Argentinian winner. The midfielder for Benfica was used as a substitute in both of his nation’s first games, but his magnificent goal against Mexico helped make him a starter.

The solid midfield combination that included Fernandez, who turns 22 in a month, Rodrigo De Paul, and Alexis MacAllister allowed Messi to work his magic. With Real Madrid and Liverpool reportedly interested in hiring him, his performances have caught the attention of the top teams in Europe.
