FIFA World Cup 2022: One of the seven World Cup stadiums that Qatar constructed can also be dismantled following the tournament. The organisers have said that Stadium 974 in Doha, which has more than 40,000 seats, was largely constructed using recycled steel and shipping containers.
After the World Cup, according to Qatar, the stadium will be completely demolished and can be transported to nations in need of infrastructure. While the design has received appreciation from outside experts, they argue that more information is needed to understand what will happen to the stadium after the event.
Stadium 974 lacks only thing
Karim Elgendy, an associate fellow at the London-based Chatham House think tank and a former climate consultant for the World Cup, stated that one of the fundamental elements of sustainable building is designing for disassembly.
Stadium 974 is also the only stadium built by Qatar that lacks air conditioning. It was given that name in honour of both Qatar’s international dialling code and the quantity of shipping containers utilised in its construction. Compared to earlier times, the air was notably hotter and more humid during Switzerland’s victory over Serbia on Friday. Only evening games are held at the stadium because of the cooler temperatures.
Qatar did not want an ‘white elephant’ stadium
The goal was to avoid creating a “white elephant,” a stadium that is left underutilised or underused once the competition is over, as happened during other World Cups in South Africa, Brazil, and Russia, according to Fenwick Iribarren Architects, who also designed two other World Cup stadiums. Following the conclusion of the games, Qatar claims to have created plans for the remaining six stadiums.
The seats in many will be removed in bulk. The multicoloured shipping containers serve as both the foundation for Stadium 974 and as inside storage for amenities like bathrooms. The vibrant red, yellow, and blue coloured steel boxes seem to be hanging between layers of steel, like enormous Lego blocks. The stadium has an industrial aesthetic because of its design.
