FIFA World Cup 2022: In sharp contrast to the response expected following any national football team loss, the Iran football team’s defeat to the US in the FIFA World Cup on Wednesday led to unusual celebrations in their home nation.
Social media has been flooded with images of Iran’s streets erupting in celebration as the nation, which is currently engaged in unrest, continues to criticise the football team they see as being connected with the oppressive government.
Why are Iranians celebrating their loss?
Following the recent videos of tyre burning and angry crowds that have surfaced from the country, Iranians can be seen dancing on the streets in videos posted to Twitter in a rare display of happiness. However, they also expressed their disapproval of the football team’s World Cup participation at such a difficult time.
Over 300 people, including children, have died since September as a result of protests against Mahsa Amini’s death, which have shook the country. Iran’s well-known morality police executed Mahsa Amini while she was being held in custody on September 16 for the “crime” of improperly wearing her hijab.
Iranians react to the incident
Iranian team did not sing national anthem
Since then, the government’s authority has been challenged in protests that have taken the country by rage.
On November 22, before their opening match against England, the Iranian football team chose not to sing the national anthem in their own take on a protest. Many Iranians still believe the football team doesn’t represent the Iranian people, but rather the government, despite the fact that some people praised the rebellion as courageous.
