Wrestlers Protest: Wrestlers have come out in the police FIR to express their painful experiences of having to endure years of sexual harassment, in spite of the belligerent stance of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. Some wrestlers assert that they experienced hostility for not endorsing Singh. According to The Hindu, the Delhi Police lodged two FIRs at the Connaught Place police station on April 28 in response to the Supreme Court’s intervention. Singh has been accused of violating several IPC sections, including those dealing with assault, sexual harassment, stalking, and common intention. He has also been detained in accordance with the POCSO Act, which protects children from sexual offences. Vinod Tomar, the WFI secretary, is also named in the police FIR.
Accusations of Assault and Coercion Against WFI Chief
A police report was made on behalf of a 17-year-old girl by her father, who has been actively competing in wrestling competitions since 2016. Her father claims that the accused approached her while pretending to take a picture of her during a competition in India where she won the gold medal. The girl was so closely grasped by Singh that she was dragged towards him by force and was unable to escape. In the FIR, her father said that Singh also purposefully ran his hand down her shoulder and touched her breasts. Singh is accused of then cautioning her about the approaching Asian Championship trials and implying that she would suffer consequences if she did not cooperate with him. “My daughter is a young wrestler who has just started her profession. Because the Federation is completely controlled by the accused and follows his orders, the victim’s father said in the FIR that she lacked the guts to confront a sexual predator like the accused. As a result, she was unable to file a complaint or bring up these issues with the Federation.
Wrestler’s Disturbing Account of Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh’s Actions
In exchange for sexual favours, one of the wrestlers claims Singh tried to pay her off by offering to provide her the nutrients she could need as an athlete. She added that Mr. Singh gave her a hard hug after forcing her to call her parents on the phone. Since I didn’t have a personal cell phone at the time, he forced me to call my parents. But as soon as the phone call was over, the accused summoned me over to where he was sitting on his bed, and then abruptly gave me a tight hug without my consent. I became very uncomfortable since the accused was touching me physically without my permission, and I started weeping because I did not enjoy it. The accused told me that nahi nahi, papa ki tarah (no, no, like a father) when he saw my annoyance and opposition and was trying to hide his immoral deeds and bad intentions, she added.
Calls for Action Against WFI Chief in Kolkata March
Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister of West Bengal, showed her support for the wrestlers protesting in Delhi for a second straight day. The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh has been the target of the wrestlers’ demands for his arrest. Banerjee promised to keep working for the wrestlers until they receive justice while organising a candlelight march from the statue of Goshto Pal in Kolkata’s Maidan neighbourhood to the statue of Mahatma Gandhi at the Mayo Road-Dufferin Road intersection. “A POCSO complaint has been filed against the head of the WFI, and despite the court’s intervention, the police have taken no action. The BJP leader has to be detained as well as resign. “I am embarrassed by the situation,” stated Banerjee. The Chief Minister questioned why BJP leaders were in charge of numerous sports organisations, and he was joined by well-known athletes from West Bengal as well as representatives from important athletic clubs. “Political figures could not previously serve as the chairman of any sporting group. When I was the Union Sports Minister, I had established this rule, stated Banerjee.
