Sudhir Naik: Sudhir Naik, a former India opener and Ranji Trophy-winning captain for Mumbai, died at the age of 78. After a brief illness, Naik, who participated in three Test matches in 1974, passed away in a hospital in Mumbai. His daughter is his only heir. The sad passing of Naik, who memorably struck the first four for India in ODIs against England in 1974 at Headingley, Leeds, was mourned by the BCCI on Thursday. Naik guided a depleted Mumbai team to a Ranji Trophy victory in 1971 while players like Sunil Gavaskar, Ajit Wadekar, Dilip Sardesai, and Ashok Mankad were making history in the Caribbean.
Naik creates a high score of 200 not out
In 85 first-class games, Naik amassed 4376 runs, with a high score of 200 not out. After he stopped playing, he oversaw the National Cricket Club’s operations. Additionally, he was instrumental in advancing the careers of Wasim Jaffer and Zaheer Khan. The Wankhede Stadium’s longtime chief curator, Naik, is credited with preparing the venue for the 50-over World Cup in 2011.

BCCI secretary Jay Shah expressed his heartfelt condolence
Jay Shah, the secretary of the BCCI, stated, “I am saddened to hear of Shri Sudhir Naik’s passing. I send my sympathies to his family, friends, and everyone of the Mumbai Cricket Association staff because this is a tragic loss. Shri Naik had a great passion for the game and contributed to it in a variety of ways, whether as a cricket player, a coach, a curator, or an administrator. He helped numerous cricketers launch their careers and had a strong eye for quality.

Sachin Tendulkar tweeted, “My heartfelt condolences to Shri Sudhir Naik ji’s family and friends. His contributions to cricket will always be remembered. May his soul rest in peace.”
