Imran Khan: Former Pakistan captain Imran Khan has been sentenced to three-year prison. The decision also involves the former Prime Minister being disqualified from politics for five years.
The World Cup-winning captain was arrested earlier today over the Toshkhana corruption case. The former medium pacer was arrested on the belief that he had been selling state gifts illegally over the years.
And now, the charges have been proven, as Judge Humayun Dilawar announced after the trial. The judge ordered his arrest while Imran Khan was not in the court for the hearing.
Huge Blow To Future Aspirations Of Imran Khan
According to various legalists, this conviction has killed any chance the Tehreek-e-Insaf chief had to participate in the national elections. The elections are set to take place in November of this year.
According to the statement by Pakistan TV, Judge Humayum Dilawar stated that Imran Khan’s involvement in the corruption case was proven. The court also fined the former Pakistan international Rs.100,000.
The additional district judge Dilawar stated that the charges against the former Prime Minister were proven. The honorable district judge further stated that a copy of the order should be sent to the Islamabad police chief for the execution of the orders.
Imran Khan’s party has called the decision biased and stated they will appeal to the higher court.
What Is Toshakhana Case?
The case was filed last year after the Election Commission of Pakistan demanded it and disqualified Imran Khan in the same case. The Islamabad High Court approved the case and started criminal proceedings against the former Prime Minister.
Toshakhana is a Cabinet department in Pakistan that stores gits given by foreign dignitaries to the country’s Government officials. And Imran Khan was charged with selling those gifts illegally.
