It looks like the stalemate between Gautam Gambhir and BCCI will finally end. It is no secret that Gambhir has been the frontrunner for the ICT head coach position for a while now.
For the past month, BCCI has been searching keenly for the next head coach of the Indian team after Rahul Dravid. They approached legends like Stephen Fleming, Ricky Ponting and Justin Langer for the position.
But every time their search came and stopped at one person who everyone liked. While both Gambhir and BCCI were keen on this partnership, the official procedure was at a stalemate. But on Tuesday, we got a huge update that might enter the Indian Cricket Team into a new era.
Gautam Gambhir To Be Interviewed!
Several media reports have reported that the Indian Cricket Board will interview Gambhir on Tuesday via a Zoom call. After a few trials and errors by BCCI, Gambhir has remained the only applicant for the position.
The KKR mentor will appear in front of CAC Ashok Malhotra, Jatin Paranjape, and Sulakshana Naik via Zoom call. Everything indicates Gambhir will be announced as the Head Coach by the end of the month.
He has also demanded his coaching staff and that is why Jonty Rhodes was also approached by BCCI for the fielding coach position. The new coach will take over the job after the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.
No Other Applicant?
It is a worrisome sign for India that there is only one suitable applicant for the job. The ICT coaching position used to be one of the most sought-after positions. But due to internal politics and a stagnant schedule, no one wants it now.
It is a commitment where you have to stay at least 10 months with the team every year. The big names are happy to serve in franchise cricket, where the stay is of very short stint and the pressure is far less.
