History of ODI World Cup
The inaugural ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup took place in 1975 in England, marking the beginning of a legendary tournament. England hosted the next two editions as well before the World Cup ventured beyond Europe. In 1987, India and Pakistan co-hosted the event, which witnessed a significant change as matches were reduced to 50 overs per innings from the previous 60 overs.
The 1992 edition saw Australia and New Zealand as co-hosts, introducing various groundbreaking modifications, including colored clothing, white ball matches, day-night encounters, and more. In 1996, the World Cup returned to the subcontinent, with India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka co-hosting the prestigious event.
Three years later, the tournament revisited the English shores before making its first appearance in Africa in 2003. West Indies had the honor of hosting the competition for the first time in 2007. In 2011, India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh jointly organized the event, followed by Australia and New Zealand co-hosting the ICC World Cup again in 2015, twenty-three years after their first collaboration. Four years later, England regained the opportunity to host the tournament after a two-decade gap, bringing the excitement and passion of the ICC World Cup back to its grounds.
