Lionel Messi: Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi have earned widespread acclaim as two of the most exceptional players to ever adorn the world of football. Their influence has spanned close to two decades, marked by a prolific tally of goals and a plethora of both individual and team honors. Beginning with their combined collection of 12 Ballon d’Or awards, with Messi securing seven of them, they have showcased an unparalleled level of excellence. However, Lionel Messi now seems to be a step ahead as he is on his way to break one more record of Ronaldo.
Lionel Messi to break Ronaldo’s record
After a captivating beginning with Inter Miami, Lionel Messi is on track to surpass Cristiano Ronaldo’s record for the highest number of goals scored for both his club and country. During the Leagues Cup final against Nashville on Saturday (August 19), the recipient of seven Ballon d’Or awards began the scoring spree with a spectacularly executed curling shot.
Messi found the net during the subsequent shootout, which ended in a 10-9 victory for the Inter Miami, marking Messi’s inaugural accomplishment on American terrain. Within seven matches for Miami, he has amassed a total of 10 goals (excluding shootouts), notably registering a goal in each game throughout their successful Leagues Cup campaign.
With his latest goal, Messi’s overall count has now reached 817 goals for both his club and his country, placing him just 27 goals behind Ronaldo’s record tally in men’s football. It’s noteworthy that Ronaldo achieved this milestone over 1174 matches, whereas Messi has achieved his 817 goals in a mere 1035 games.
However, when it comes to the scoring rate, the duo falls considerably behind the third-ranked Jozef Bican, who astonishingly netted 805 goals in a mere 530 games. Following closely behind are Brazilian icons Romario (with 772 goals in 963 games) and the legendary Pele (who achieved 757 goals in 812 games), securing the third and fourth positions on the list respectively.
