Harmanpreet Kaur – Suryakumar Yadav: Harmanpreet Kaur has etched her name in history by becoming the first Indian woman to be named among the Wisden Cricketers of the Year. The selection is made by the Wisden editor, and it has been a tradition dating back to 1889. Kaur joins the likes of New Zealand’s Tom Blundell and Daryl Mitchell, along with England’s Ben Foakes and Matthew Potts, as the other recipients of this prestigious honour. Suryakumar Yadav has also been named as leading T20I cricketer of the year.
Harmanpreet Kaur and Suryakumar Yadan’s new record
Harmanpreet Kaur’s inclusion in the Wisden Cricketers of the Year list is primarily attributed to her brilliant 143-run knock off 111 balls at Canterbury, which helped India secure their first-ever ODI series win on English soil since 1999. Additionally, she also led India to the final of the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, where they finished as runners-up after losing to Australia.
Suryakumar Yadav, on the other hand, was named the Wisden T20I cricketer of the year for his exceptional performances throughout the previous year. In 2022, Yadav became only the second player to score 1,000 T20I runs in a single year, with two centuries, one against England in Nottingham and the other against New Zealand in Mount Maunganui. What sets his effort apart is that he scored all those runs at a remarkable strike rate of 187.43 while batting in the middle order.
Who are Wisden Cricketers of the year Awardees?
Meanwhile, Beth Mooney, the Australian batter, has been named the world’s top women’s cricketer for the second time in three years. Mooney led her country to World Cup triumphs in the 50-over and 20-over formats, and also won a gold medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
England captain Ben Stokes has been crowned the ‘Leading Cricketer in the World’ (male) for his remarkable performances on the cricket field. The 31-year-old all-rounder led England to nine wins in ten tests and played a crucial role in their victory in the T20 World Cup final against Pakistan in November. Prior to his appointment as captain in April last year, England had only one win in their previous 17 Tests. This is the third time that Stokes has been awarded the prestigious title of leading cricketer, having previously won it in 2019 and 2020. In 2021, the award was won by his countryman Joe Root.
