Kohli’s heartfelt gesture towards Rohit occurred during the 26th over of the Sri Lankan innings. Positioned at the slip, Rohit made a quick and instinctive catch to dismiss Sri Lankan captain Shanaka, who fell victim to spinner Ravindra Jadeja. Kohli, witnessing Rohit’s game-changing catch of Shanaka in the low-scoring thriller, couldn’t contain his excitement over India securing such a crucial wicket, which ultimately limited Sri Lanka to 99-6 during their unsuccessful chase in Colombo.
Kohli’s enthusiastic actions in support of Rohit didn’t go unnoticed by fans on the internet. While the Sri Lankan innings were underway, the 34-year-old cricketer also engaged in a group hug with his teammates, including KL Rahul, Kuldeep Yadav, and captain Rohit. It appeared that the former Indian captain was particularly impressed by the bowling prowess of spinner Kuldeep, who played a pivotal role as the primary wicket-taker for the Indian team.

In the earlier stages of the match, Kohli and Rohit established themselves as the quickest pair to amass 5,000 partnership runs in the 50-over format. Their partnership in ODI cricket marked them as the eighth batting duo to achieve this milestone. Notably, Kohli and Rohit joined the ranks of only three Indian pairs to reach this remarkable milestone in ODIs, following in the footsteps of Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly. Furthermore, opener Rohit Sharma also achieved the feat of 5,000 partnership runs in ODIs with fellow opener Shikhar Dhawan.
