The legendary hockey player Balbir Singh Jr. died on Tuesday. Hockey India mourned the passing away of legendary hockey player Balbir Singh Jr, playing alongside a legend like Balbir Singh Dosanjh.
Balbir Singh Jr. who played alongside Balbir Singh Sr. as well as other top players like Leslie Claudius, Prithvipal Singh, Balakishan, Charles Stephen.
Balbir Singh Jr. was part of the Indian team that won the silver in the Asian Games held in Tokyo, Japan in 1958. Balbir Singh Jr. lived in Chandigarh after retiring as a Major in the Indian Army.
Balbir Singh Jr. is known as Hockey Nursery of India from Sansarpur (Jalandhar).
Born on 2 June 1932 at Sansarpur in Jalandhar, Balbir Singh Jr. learned to play hockey at the age of six. He was first selected in the Indian team in 1951.
He joined the Indian Army in 1962 and continued to play for the Army team. He settled in Chandigarh after retiring as Major in 1984. Punjab Governor and Administrator of Chandigarh Union Territory VP Singh Badnore has mourned his death.
Hockey India has also mourned the death of Balbir Singh Jr. Hockey India President Gyanendro Ningombam said, “On behalf of Hockey India, I mourn the family of Balbir Singh Jr. His contribution to Indian hockey will always be remembered and the hockey world is saddened by his death
