Hockey World Cup 2023: After edging Belgium in a dramatic penalty shootout on Sunday, Germany won the Hockey World Cup for the third time in team history. After trailing by two goals early on, the German team rallied back to win the game 5-4 in the shootout to win the title three times.

In the top matchup in Bhubaneshwar, the Germans overcame a two-goal deficit through the efforts of Niklas Wellen, Gonzalo Peillat, and Mats Grambusch to overcome the reigning champions. With a 2-0 lead after just ten minutes, Belgium got off to the best possible start. In the ninth minute, Belgium took the lead thanks to a goal by Florent van Aubel. They then increased it in the tenth minute with another field goal.

Equal tension brewed throughout in Hockey World Cup 2023

Tanguy Cosyns’ goal seemed to have Belgium on standby. The second quarter would see Germany exert influence on the eurozone. Germany scored from a penalty corner thanks to Niklas Wellen, despite missing a penalty shoot.

As the game was equally balanced at the moment, Peillat then stepped up to the challenge and tied it at 2-2 with a penalty corner in the 40th minute. The Germans subsequently took the lead in the 48th minute thanks to Gramsbusch, who enthralled the fans as they attempted to accomplish another comeback victory after upsetting Australia and England earlier in the game.

The goal stunned Belgium, and they immediately started applying pressure inside the German circle. Their persistence paid off in the 58th minute when Tom Boon scored from a penalty corner to square the game at 3-3 and force a shootout.

Marco Miltkau’s attempt was unsuccessful, Cosyns scored to make the score 2-2. After Thies Prinz made it 3-2 with a stroke, Antoine Kina promptly tied the score. Then, with everything on the line as they approached sudden death, Grambusch missed a crucial opportunity to win it.

In order to heighten the tension, Wellen and Van Aubel knotted the score at 4-4. After a great effort by Frinz to equalise the score at 5-4, Belgium missed their go-ahead stroke, giving Germany the victory.
