Hugo Lloris: Legendary French goalkeeper and World Cup-winning captain, Hugo, announced that he is retiring from international football. Lloris played his last game for the national team against Argentina in the 2022 World Cup final, when his team lost in a penalty shootout. Lloris had guided France to World Cup victory in Russia in the previous edition. The player will still serve as the manager of Tottenham Hotspur, a Premier League team where he has played for more than 10 years.

Hugo Lloris ends international career
In a statement, Lloris said “I’ve decided to stop my international career, with the feeling that I have given everything. I think it is important to announce this now, two-and-a-half months before the start of Euro qualifying.”
In their qualifying group for the 2024 European Championship, France was paired with Gibraltar, Greece, the Netherlands, and the Republic of Ireland. In a friendly matchup with Uruguay in November 2008, Lloris made his debut for his country at the age of 21. In the World Cup final loss to Argentina, he received his 145th cap, breaking the previous appearance record set by France. In addition, Lloris set a record by leading France 121 times.
Lloris opens up on his decision
Lloris also added, “I have really been thinking about it since the end of the World Cup, but there has been something deep inside of me for maybe six months now and which grew during the competition, leading me to make this decision.”
Lloris made this decision when Didier Deschamps, the manager of France, extended his tenure until June 2026. Hugo Lloris will still serve as Tottenham Hotspur’s captain in both the Premier League and the Champions League as things stand. The renowned French goalkeeper was acquired from Lyon in August 2012 and has played for France for more than ten years.
